There is no doubt that venetian blinds make for a stunning addition to any window, but like any other piece of furniture in your home, they require regular maintenance to keep them looking their best. Venetian blinds are easy to maintain with a light clean every other week, and a deep clean every twelve months, or if you notice a significant build up of dirt.
The ways in which to clean your venetian blinds vary slightly depending on their material. Aluminium, synthetic, and PVC blinds can withstand more moisture than wooden blinds. Using too much water when cleaning wooden versions can be damaging, even causing the wood to bend and warp over time.
In this short guide, we will share with you how to clean your venetian blinds quickly, cost efficiently, and without too much elbow grease!
How to Clean Venetian Blinds – Light Cleaning
Dust may settle on horizontal venetian blinds if they are installed in a room which has heavy foot traffic or placed over a window. A quick wipe over with a feather duster or dry cloth everytime you notice dust accumulating can reduce the need of a thorough annual deep clean. If you do not own a feather duster or suitable cloth, covering your hand with a sock will work just as efficiently.
Wipe down each slat individually from side to side ensuring any dirt gathering in the corners is swept away in a downwards motion. It’s best to start at the top of the blinds. Be sure to clean both sides of the slats, it can be quicker and easier to complete a light clean with the blinds closed, then tilting them 180 degrees and cleaning the opposite side.
Many household v
acuum cleaners come equipped with upholstery attachments or brushes which can make for a fantastic way to clear away any dust from your blinds in a short space of time. When using this method, be sure to have your vacuum to its lowest setting and ensure the blinds cords are moved out of the way.
If you notice any stains during the process of light cleaning, they can be removed without deep cleaning. For wooden or faux wood blinds, you will need to use a venetian blind cleaner, however, for aluminium, PVC, and
synthetic blinds you can whip up a solution of equal parts warm water and white vinegar to wipe the blinds down with a microfiber cloth (or sock). Dry the blinds using a soft cloth to reduce the risk of any watermarks once the stains have been removed.

How to Clean Venetian Blinds – Deep Cleaning
Venetian blinds do stand the test of time and with regular light cleaning, there shouldn’t be a need to do a deep clean on them any more than once a year. Similarly to the light clean options, this is not suitable for wooden or faux wood blinds, they will require specialist products to prevent warping or bending.
The first step of a deep clean is to remove the blinds from the window. Some blinds will require the use of a power drill, whereas brands such as “perfect fit blinds” can easily be removed with their handy snap feature. Simply lay them on the floor beforehand.
The two easiest ways to clean your venetian blinds is either outside with the help of a hosepipe, or in a bathtub which has an overhead shower. If you decide to take your blinds into the garden, lay an old sheet down on the floor to prevent any scratches.
Fill a bowl with equal parts warm water and white vinegar, alternatively you can use a mild detergent suitable for your blinds material. Using either a non-abrasive sponge or microfiber cloth, wipe down each slat thoroughly on either side. Once the slats are clean, use fresh water from the shower or hosepipe to rinse away any soapy residue from the blinds.
There are several effective ways for drying your blinds depending on how much time you have or how quickly you want to have your blinds back up on the windows. Go over each slat with a hairdryer on its lowest setting for the quickest way to dry your venetian blinds. Remember, you may damage the slats if you turn the heat up on the hairdryer. If you have a little more time and want to ensure a completely streak free finish, wipe down each slat with a dry cloth and then use the hair dryer method to finish off. Alternatively, you can hang your blinds over a shower rail or fence to dry naturally.
